Our correspondent, Alan Smithfield, follows members of Company C, 1st Squad 2nd Platoon of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Battalion from shortly after their arrival in the South-until near the end of the war. The series runs in 6 parts, and helps to illustrate the life of both the common soldier and officer alike. This series answers a great many of the often asked questions of the American Civil War, such as; "Why did soldiers join to fight in the Civil War?", "Where did soldiers sleep, and what did they eat?", and so on.
